What is the Lymphatic System?
The Lymphatic System is a network of pathways throughout the body that have three main functions:
- To remove cellular fluid in the form of toxins and waste from our bodies.
- As part of our immune system, it helps supply white blood cells to fight against infection.
- To play a role in the absorption of fats and soluble nutrients.
Movement and exercise, as well as massage can play a role in maintaining the flow of lymph in a healthy body.
There is a network of lymph capillaries, vessels, nodes, ducts, and organs throughout the body.
What are the signs and symptoms of a blocked Lymphatic System?
If the Lymphatic System is blocked, it means the lymph vessels that drain the tissue in the body as well as our immune cells are unable to function properly.
Some signs of a blocked Lymphatic System includes:
- Swelling extremities
- Sore and stiffness in muscles
- Cold hands and feet
- fluid -filled lumps in the lymphatic nodes
- Chronic fatigue
- Excess weight
- Depression
Common areas in the body where lymph nodes are located and can get swollen.
- Behind the neck
- Under the chin
- Under the armpit
- Near the groin
- Behind the knee
- Occipital
- Submandibular
- Axillary
- Inguinal
- Popliteal
These lymph nodes or sites act as the body’s filters for toxins, debris, harmful bacterial or viral infections. These areas also produce white blood cells to fight off viruses, bacteria or cancer.
How aromatherapy can help support the Lymphatic System?
Aromatherapy can aid the Lymphatic System to flow more easily, it can encourage removal of waste products from the tissue, improve circulating white blood cells, help immune function, and prevent infection and build-up of toxins in the body.
Some essential oils have therapeutic properties that can stimulate lymphatic function, support the lymphatic system and help boost the Immune System.
We can use Aromatherapy such as self-massage, bathing, and topical application to help cleanse and purify our lymphatic system.
