Product Making with Essential Oils: Part II

Product Making with Essential Oils: Part II

Essential oils have been part of natural and holistic skincare for centuries like the luxurious skin-softening properties of the Rose, which have been famously used by Cleopatra to maintain her beauty. These potent oils harness a wide range of botanical therapeutics to address practically every skincare need. With hundreds of oils to choose from, essential oils can treat everything from acne scars to wrinkles, not to mention the aromatherapy benefits that create a sense of calm.

Unlike chemicals and synthetics from other skincare products, features of essential oils can be far-reaching. It relaxes our senses and supports our physical and psychological well-being to achieve holistic sense of wellness. Another feature that lends these all-natural oils to enhanced skincare is that they are absorbed easily through the skin, thereby being very receptive to simple topical remedies and applications.

In our last blog, we shared five do-it-yourself recipes of products that we can use in our body, all are infused with essential oils of course. For this blog, we will share more skincare recipes that we can use for our face to upgrade our skincare game.

THERAPEUTIC LIP BALM

If you have regularly cracked and dry lips, there's an easy fix for that problem -- one that you can make right from the comfort of your home in just a couple of minutes. This homemade therapeutic lip balm will make your lips smell amazing, look fabulous, and stay hydrated.

What you need:

  • 2 tbsp. Shea Butter
  • 2 tbsp. Sweet Almond or Jojoba Oil
  • 1 tbsp. Soy-based wax (you can also use beeswax or candelilla)
  • Balm Containers (can be lip balm tins or lip balm tubes)
  • 5 drops of Essential Oil Blend

In a double boiler, melt the wax, carrier oil and shea butter. Gently stir while keeping an eye on the mixture, making sure that it never boils. Allow the mixture to slightly cool before adding the essential oil blend. Mix well and before it starts to harden, pour the natural lip balm into your balm containers. Let it cool before applying it to your lips.

Here are some combinations for the lip balm recipe that you can choose from:

  • Orange Essential Oil and Jojoba Carrier Oil - It's a great summer lip balm combination. The orange essential oil helps nourish your dry lips thanks to its natural anti-inflammatory properties. Jojoba carrier oil not only smells great, but it's also popular in providing relief from dry and itchy skin.
  • Bergamot and Spearmint Essential Oils - Bergamot essential oil has a sweet, citrusy, and floral aroma that blends well with herb oils. Meanwhile, Spearmint essential oil has a slightly sweeter and more mild aroma than peppermint oil. This blend is not only great for the lips, it's also uplifting, balancing, and rejuvenating.
  • Peppermint and Rosemary Essential Oils - This blend is perfect for the holiday season. Both oils have fantastic and calming aroma and have antibacterial properties that can help reduce swelling and cuts on our dry lips.

MAKEUP REMOVER PADS

Some store-bought make-up removers are using harsh chemicals to remove make-up, which can make your skin dry and prone to breakouts. If you're looking to switch for a toxin-free way to remove your make-up, you can use this make-up remover wipes recipe with essential oil. It does not only remove your make-up so easily (even your stubborn waterproof mascara), but your face will feel amazing afterwards.

What you need:

  • 2 tbsp. Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil
  • 2 tbsp. Distilled Water
  • 1/4 cup Witch Hazel
  • 2 tbsp. Castile Soap
  • 6-10 drops of Essential Oils
  • 24 Cotton Rounds
  • 4 oz. Glass Jar

Stack your cotton rounds into a glass jar and set aside. In a separate mixing bowl, add your chosen essential oil, then your castile soap and carrier oil. Mix well then add the witch hazel and water. Blend all of the ingredients together. Pour the mixture over the cotton rounds slowly, making sure it doesn't overflow. You can alternate pouring the mixture then pressing down the cotton rounds before continuing to pour again. This is to make sure that every cotton round will be doused with the mixture. To store them properly, you can keep the jar in a cool place and keep it sealed tight (to prevent the cotton rounds from drying out). This can last you 2-3 weeks depending on how often you need to use them.

For the essential oil blend, you can use oils like Frankincense, Lavender, Tea Tree, Copaiba, Patchouli, Geranium, and Manuka. These oils have really good benefits on the skin, keeping it from drying out and removes any grime and dirt in your face. BEARD OIL

Just like our hair, men's facial hair needs to be conditioned or it will become dry, brittle, and have that "flyaway" look. The longer the beard becomes, the greater the discomfort and risk for dry and unhealthy underlying skin. Using this beard oil will help moisturize the beard, keep it looking soft, tamed, conditioned, and healthy.

What you need:

  • 1 oz. glass dropper bottle
  • 5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil
  • 1 oz. Jojoba Oil (you can also use Fractionated Coconut Oil or Almond Oil)

To do this, add all your essential oils to the glass dropper bottle. Top the dropper bottle with Jojoba or Fractionated Coconut oil, making sure that you fill right below the top so that you won't waste any essential oil. Add your cover and gently shake the bottle to incorporate everything. To use this, massage 1-2 drops of this blend into the beard from root to tip every morning and evening.
